Alexander Zverev downed Chilean Nicolas Jarry on Friday to get within two victories of winning the Terra Wortmann Open.

Zverev has twice reached the championship match at the OWL Arena but is yet to claim on of his ‘home’ events.

The German advanced in an hour and 56 minutes after defeating Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov in his first two rounds. He put up another consistent effort in front of his home crowd in Halle.

Zverev committed just 12 unforced errors across the contest and looked dialled in and notably calmer than usual.

There was only one significant point in the match where Zverev faced problems. At 4-2 in the second set, he had faced three break points but held thanks to strong backhands and massive serve.

Zverev increased his career record against Jarry to 3-2 with his 24th victory of the year, exacting revenge for the Chilean’s semi-final triumoph over the 27-year-old in Geneva back in May.

Zverev, who advanced to the Halle finals in both 2016 and 2017, is going for his first championship since winning the Nitto ATP Finals in 2021. The World No. 22 advanced to the semifinals in Dubai, Geneva, and Roland Garros earlier this season.

The German has been savouring being back in action after his horror injury at Roland Garros in 2022.

“That was the most difficult year of my life,” said 26-year-old Zverev. “I love playing tennis and the sport and competition were taken away from me.

“I am so happy to be back on this stage and happy to be able to have another chance to play for a place in the final.”

Zverev was delighted to match his French Open run from last term to keep himself afloat in the rankings and now has a chance to make a charge up the standings having missed out on the grass swing through the 2022 season.

He will face big-serving Alexander Bublik in the last four.

When Jannik Sinner was forced to quit due to injury, Bublik advanced to his second tour-level semi-final of the year in other action in Halle.

Bublik, who reached the quarterfinals in Marseille in February, had a 7-5, 2-0 lead over the 21-year-old when Sinner retired hurt. On Saturday, the 25-year-old will compete against Zverev in the semifinals.

In later action, number one seed Daniil Medvedev plays Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut while third seed Andrey Rublev faces Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.
