Andy Murray targeting deep runs at Indian Wells and Miami
Andy Murray wants to continue his recent resurgence on the ATP Tour in his bid for a good seeding at Wimbledon.
Murray is ranked 55th in the world right now but says that he feels better than he has in years and believes he is well-paced to go deep at Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
The former world no 1 has not reached the last eight of an ATP 1000 tournament since he won the Paris Masters back in 2016.
Indian Wells is one of two Masters tournaments that Murray has never won with his best performance coming in the 2009 tournament when he lost the final to Rafael Nadal.
“I want to have deep runs in these events,” Murray said.
“That hasn’t happened in a couple years. I do feel like I’m playing well enough to do that now. I feel like physically this is the best I’ve felt for a long time so if I do have to play three or four matches in a few days, I believe that I’m able to do that and still play at a high level.
“Even 18 months or two years ago, when that was happening, I didn’t feel like I was recovering as well. [My] body [might’ve] been a bit sore and a bit tired, but I’ve worked really hard to get back to this point and I trust that I’m ready to have a good run at some stage.”
Despite never lifting the trophy, Murray enjoys visiting the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
“I’ve always enjoyed coming back here,” Murray said. “At this stage of my career, you want to make the most of every chance you get to play in these sorts of events. You never know when it will be the last time. Definitely try to take it all in.”
Murray is not getting ahead of himself when it comes to the prospect of potential meeting with compatriots Jack Draper or Dan Evans.
He will have to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry and 15th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in order to book his place in the round of 32.
“There’s a lot of Brits in my section of the draw but I’d have to win two tough matches to get there,” Murray said. “Let’s see what happens.”
Murray will start his tournament on Thursday when he will face Etcheverry in a first round match.
