ATP Rankings: Carlos Alcaraz starts another week at No 1 as Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner hit career bests

The rising stars of men’s tennis are dominating the top 10 of the ATP Rankings with Carlos Alcaraz sitting pretty at the No 1 while Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner have moved up to career-high positions.

With his closest challenger Novak Djokovic skipping the Canadian Open, Alcaraz was assured of staying top in the last ATP Rankings and he has now held that position for 33 weeks – although it has come over four different spells.

His current stint started on June 26 on the back of his Queen’s Club Championship and he held off the challenge of Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon to remain top at the start of the North American hard-court swing.

Djokovic, though, will once again rival him for top spot during this week’s Cincinnati Open. Alcaraz has a 600-point lead in the official rankings, but it is effectively 430 as the Spaniard will drop 170 points as he reached the quarter-finals in Ohio last year.

By contrast, Djokovic doesn’t have any points to defend as he missed the tournament last year so it is all to play for at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati as it will also determine the seedings for the US Open.

The top four positions in this week’s rankings are changed with Alcaraz leading Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

There is a new member in the top five as Rune cracked fifth spot for the first time in his career, moving up one place despite his early exit in Toronto.

Sinner, meanwhile, moved up two places to a career-high No 6 following his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title with Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev the men to drop a couple of places.

The rest of the top 10 remains unchanged while beaten Canada finalist Alex de Minaur also reached a new high as he moved up six places to No 12.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina moved up 14 places to a career-high No 24 after reaching the last four in Toronto while Mackenzie McDonald jumped 16 places to No 43 after making it to the quarter-finals.

In terms of British interest, Cameron Norrie is still the British No 1 although he dropped two places to No 15 while Dan Evans slipped seven positions to No 28. Former world No 1 Andy Murray climbed four spots and is up to No 36.
