Jannik Sinner is now 16th on the all-time list for most weeks spent at No 1 in the ATP Rankings, but the big winners the past week were rising stars Joao Fonseca and Hamad Medjedovic.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Sinner has been top of the rankings since last June when he replaced Novak Djokovic and he started his 37th consecutive week at No 1 on Monday to move ahead of his great rival Carlos Alcaraz on the all-time list.

The Italian now just three weeks behind Ilie Năstase in 15th spot while Andy Murray sits in 14th place on 41 weeks and Gustavo Kuerten is on 43 weeks. Sinner is set to move up a few more spots in the coming weeks as he is assured of remaining top until at least the middle of March.

The 23-year-old did drop 500 ranking points on Monday on the back of his decision not to defend his Rotterdam Open trophy last week so the gap to second-placed Alexander Zverev has seen a slight reduction although it remains big.

Australian Open champion Sinner has a 3,195-point advantage over Zverev with the German failing to make the most the No 1’s inactivity as he lost early at the Buenos Aires Open.

Carlos Alcaraz is another 725 points adrift of Zverev, but there is hope for Sinner’s challengers as he will not feature in the next three months on the ATP Tour as he is serving a ban for failing two doping tests last March.

Daniil Medvedev reached the semi-final of the Open 13 so he moves up two places to No 6 while Alex de Minaur drops two spots.

The 21-year-old Medjedovic was the man who beat Medvedev in Marseille and the Serbian is rewarded with a 23-place surge to a career-high No 73 after finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert.

Frenchman Humbert defended his Open 13 title and he is up three places to No 14.

But one of the best stories of the week came in Buenos Aires where Fonseca became the youngest South American to win a singles title since the inception of the ATP Tour in 1990.

The 18-year-old Brazilian, who started 2024 outside the top 700, defeated Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to win his maiden title. With the victory comes a 31-place jump in the rankings to No 68.

Miomir Kecmanovic was the other title winner on the Tour last week as he lifted the Delray Beach Open trophy and he is up 14 places to No 42 while beaten finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina moved up 10 places to No 50.
