ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic closing in on astonishing milestone, Jannik Sinner on the charge
Novak Djokovic remains well clear of Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings following the mid-week conclusion of the latest ATP events as he edged closer to yet another impressive record while Jannik Sinner was the big winner on the court and in terms of the rankings.
On the back of winning the US Open, Djokovic opened a mammoth 3,260-point advantage over Alcaraz and the Spaniard had set his sights on chipping away at that lead in Beijing, but his defeat in the semi-final meant he only reduced the deficit by 180 points.
As a result, 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic still holds a 2,830-point lead over the 20-year-old, who will look to reduce the advantage further at this week’s Shanghai Masters as the Serbian has opted to skip the entire Asian swing.
Djokovic also extended his record for most weeks at No 1 as he has now spent an incredible 393 weeks at the top and, if all goes according to plan, he could hit week No 400 at the conclusion of the ATP Finals in Turin in mid-November.
Daniil Medvedev remains at No 3 in the rankings following his runners-up finish at the China Open, but his conqueror Sinner is up to a career-high No 4.
Sinner enjoyed a magical time in Beijing as he defeated Alcaraz in straight sets in the semi-final and then won two tie-breakers against Medvedev in the final to win his third ATP Tour singles title of the year and ninth in total.
The Italian moved up three places in the rankings and he is followed by Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev in the top 10.
There is also a new career-high for Alex de Minaur as the Australian is up to No 11 after reaching the round of 16 in China with Tommy Paul one place behind him, which is also a career-high for the American.
Frenchman Adrian Mannarino was the other title winner this week as he lifted the Astana Open and jumped up 11 places to No 23.
As for British interest, Cameron Norrie remains the No 1 and he sits at No 16 with Dan Evans at No 33, Andy Murray No 39 and Jack Draper No 94.
