ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic’s lead at the top shrinks, Lorenzo Musetti hits career-best ranking

Novak Djokovic remains atop the ATP Rankings despite an early exit in Banja Luka and the 22-time Grand Slam winner will remain there until at least May 8.

The world No 1 sports a sufficient 365-point lead in the rankings to hold onto the top spot despite pulling out of this week’s Madrid Open, which runs until May 7.

While world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz won the Barcelona Open on Sunday, he makes no rankings gain as he was the defending champion, and it is a similar story at the Madrid Open where he will again look to make it back-to-back titles.

Djokovic will drop 360 points as he reached the semi-final last year and will thus move from his current 7,135 points to 6,775 after the Madrid Open – leaving him potentially only five points ahead of Alcaraz.

The Spaniard is currently on 6,770 points and a successful fortnight in Madrid will see him stay on that figure, but any defeat will result in a drop in points.

The only change to the top 10 of the men’s rankings sees Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud trade places.

Medvedev, who missed the Barcelona Open, has been in great form so far this term as he has already won four tournaments, while Ruud has had his struggles.

The 2021 US Open champion is one of two men who could usurp Alcaraz at No 2 should he enjoy a run to the Madrid Open final. Ruud can also leap up if he can turn around his recent form with an extended run in Spain.

In places five through 10 there is no movement in terms of rankings places although Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz all made points gains.

Fritz has managed to hold onto his American No 1 status but only just with Frances Tiafoe now hot on his heels right as he is back up to No 11.

Lorenzo Musetti is up to a career-best No 18 after the Italian follwed up his Monte Carlo Masters quarter-final appearance with a run to the Barcelona Open semi-final.
