ATP Rankings: The ten highest-ranked national No 1s
The goal of many players on the ATP Tour is to ascend to the rank of national No 1 ahead of all their compatriots.
For some players, that is tougher than for others, for instance, there are four American players in the top 20 and two Russian players in the top ten.
Being your home country’s No 1 player is a coveted spot and brings with it expectations of participation in team events, and perhaps most importantly, means a place at the Olympics is far more likely.
10 Hubert Hurkacz Polish No 1
The Shanghai Masters title propelled Hubert Hurkacz back towards the ATP Rankings top ten, but he has long been the Polish No 1.
Hurkacz has won two titles this season and was 38-21 for the season heading into the Swiss Indoors, where he has progressed to the last four.
He cannot move up in the rankings this week, but a run to the title would keep him in the very tight Race to Turin.
9 Alexander Zverev German No 1
German No 1 Alexander Zverev has surprised a few this season after making his return to action from a horror injury at the French Open last season.
Zverev also has two titles to his name this season, with his wins coming at his home event in Hamburg and in Chengdu.
Even though he spent a long time out of the game, Zverev looked unlikely to ever surrender the status of German No 1, with veteran Jan-Lennard Struff not displaying anywhere near the kind of form required to give him any worries.
8 Taylor Fritz USA No 1
Taylor Fritz has done well to maintain his status as American No 1 throughout a tough season where significant challengers have sought to establish themselves.
Fritz has Tommy Paul (No 12), Frances Tiafoe (No 14) and Ben Shelton (no 16) breathing down his neck.
Both of his titles this season came on American soil with a win at Delray Beach followed up with the Atlanta Open title.
7 Casper Ruud Norwegian No 1
Casper Ruud has already set himself well above any other Norwegian man with his rankings achievements to date.
The former world No 2 is the player from Norway with the highest ranking since the introduction of the system.
His success this term has largely been confined to clay, the surface he won the Estoril Open on while he also reached finals in Paris and Bastad.
6 Stefanos Tsitsipas Greek No 1
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the first player from Greece to crack the top 100 on the ATP Rankings.
He is the first man from Greece to win a Masters title and along with WTA star Maria Sakkari is leading an exciting generation of players for the country.
He is famously in a relationship with former WTA world No 2 Paula Badosa of Spain.
5 Holger Rune Danish No 1
Holger Rune is another trailblazer who cracks this list as the top Danish man in rankings history.
Rune is still out to emulate Caroline Wozniacki though who was a world No 1 and Grand Slam champion.
Rune has lost two Masters series finals this season after winning his maiden title at that level in the Paris Indoors in late 2022.
4 Jannik Sinner Italian No 1
Jannik Sinner has a rich history to live up to as an Italian player even if the nation hasn’t tasted a whole lot of recent successes.
Sinner has distinguished himself as the first Italian man to win a Masters title after Matteo Berrettini suffered two finals losses.
He has given Italian tennis fans hopes of ending a long wait for a male Grand Slam winner.
3 Daniil Medvedev Russian No 1
Daniil Medvedev has enjoyed quite the season even if it has been frustrating for the Russian at times.
Medvedev has won five titles this season from the eight finals he has reached.
He has won three or more titles in each of the last four seasons and has earned a reputation as a consistently great player.
2 Carlos Alcaraz Spanish No 1
Carlos Alcaraz has ensured that Spanish tennis has few worries regarding its immediate future despite Rafael Nadal winding down his career.
Alcaraz could still become the youngest player to secure the year-end No 1 ranking but needs a big finish.
He leads the way in terms of tournaments won this season with six trophies added to his collection so far this season.

1 Novak Djokovic Serbian No 1
There is no doubt that Novak Djokovic is the best player ever to come out of Serbia and is also the best player ever when it comes to rankings success.
He is out to finish as the year-end No 1 for an incredible eighth time in 2023.
Djokovic has also claimed more ATP Tour prize money than any other player in history by some distance.
