Cameron Norrie battled to an impressive three-set win over seventh seed Jordan Thompson in the opening round of the Atlanta Open.

The British No 2 required three hours and 27 minutes to see off Australian Thompson 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3.

Both players struggled to hold serve early in the deciding set with five breaks in the first six games, three of those going to Norrie, but once things settled down the Brit eased over the line.

Teenager Alexei Popyrin also caused an upset as he beat American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4 to secure only his seventh ATP Tour singles win over the year.

The 19-year-old Australian’s reward is a second-round encounter against fourth seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

World No 94 Bradley Klahn also advanced as the American beat Marius Copil from Romania 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in an hour and 28 minutes to book a clash against third seed Alex De Minaur from Australia.
