Carlos Alcaraz has a long way to go before he matches Novak Djokovic’s haul of 24 Grand Slam titles, but he is already several steps ahead of his great rival in one key statistic.

Djokovic has dominated tennis over the last five years, with half of his record-breaking haul of major titles coming since 2018.

That run of success came at the back end of the careers of his great rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who has struggled with injuries in the final years of their own record-breaking career.

Yet a glance at the success of the next great star of the men’s game suggests he is on course to follow in the footsteps of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

At the age of 20, Alcaraz already has two Grand Slam titles and ten additional ATP Tour-level wins.

This includes an impressive four titles at ATP Masters 1000 level, the tournaments that carry the most significance outside of the Grand Slams.

Alcaraz has also held the world No 1 ranking despite his tender years and was crowned as year-end No 1 in 2022, ending a run that saw Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray dominate that prestigious list since 2004.

Intriguingly, the record books confirm Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were significantly behind Carlos Alcaraz in the titles won stakes by the age of 20.

Djokovic had claimed just five ATP Tour-level title wins by that stage of his career, with his formative years notable for several high-profile withdrawals from tournaments due to injury.

Federer was also a late bloomer, as his potential did not flourish until he won his first Wimbledon title in 2003, when he was 21.

After that, Federer embarked on a spell of dominance that saw him lock a vice-like hold on the men’s game, as he took tennis to the next level.

Djokovic has done that in recent years, with the Serbian’s level of excellence moving through the gears as his great rivals have exited the game’s biggest stages.

So Alcaraz’s remarkable achievement of winning 12 titles at the age of 20 is remarkable, yet his compatriot Nadal was already a double French Open champion at that age and had 17 Tour-level titles in his collection.

Nadal is currently battling injury as he attempts to make a comeback at the age of 37, with his longevity in the game all the more remarkable given how young he was when he started playing his attritional brand of tennis at the very highest level.

Tennis legend Jimmy Connors has predicted Alcaraz could get close to the records that have been set by Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, as he believes the young Spaniard is a certainty to take his major title wins into double figures if he avoids serious injury.

“If Carlos Alcaraz plays until he is 33, he has got 13 years,” said Connors.

“Let’s just say he plays for 12 more years, that is 48 more slams And if he doesn’t get too full of himself, I would say he could get to 15 (major title wins).

“There’s going to be some new kids coming up now, you know those who see him. The 16, 17, and 18 who see him and say, ‘If he can do it, I can do it too. If he’s working like this, I’m working like that! But they are all going to find their own way.”

We have witnessed some unique tennis history with the stories of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic over the last two decades and now tennis may have a new kid on the block who may have enough time to challenge their records.
