Cincinnati TV and streaming: When are Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Cameron Norrie playing?
The seven top 10 seeds left in the Western & Southern Open draw will all feature on Thursday with world No 1 Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz the headline acts.
Wednesday provided a couple of upsets in Mason, Ohio, as second seed Rafael Nadal and fifth seed Casper Ruud were beaten and Medvedev and company will hope they don’t follow suit in the third round.
Medvedev opened his ATP Masters 1000 campaign with a straight set win over Botic van de Zandschlup, but he faces another tricky encounter as he is up against left-handed Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
After Monday’s win, the Russian admitted that he needs to up his game.
“The first match is tricky and I’m happy that I managed to go through, and hopefully I will raise my level in the next matches,” he said.
There was some good news for Medvedev on the back of Nadal’s defeat as the US Open champion is now assured of being top seed for his title defence at Flushing Meadows as the Spaniard had to win the tournament to have any chance of usurping him.
Third seed Alcaraz plays on Friday morning (UK time) and he faces 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic while British 1 Cameron Norrie, fresh from seeing off three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray, will be up against American wildcard Ben Shelton, who stunned Ruud.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, is in with a chance of climbing to No 2 in the ATP Rankings on the back of Nadal’s loss and defending champion Alexander Zverev’s absence in Cincinnati. The Spaniard exited the tournament in the first round last year so had no points to defend and a title-run, which yields 1000 points, will see him jump from No 4 to No 2.
