Jannik Sinner ‘not ready’ to be compared to Carlos Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner’s coach Simone Vagnozzi will have no part in comparison’s between his charge and former world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz.
Vagnozzi doesn’t feel it would be constructive for anyone to compare themselves to the Spanish tennis prodigy.
Sinner swept to his first Masters title in Toronto and put up a great showing in Turin where he reached the championship match but his coach didn’t want to be stacked up against Alcaraz.
“Carlos is two years younger, but he’s already at a good point on many things. Jannik still has a lot of work to do,” Sinner’s long-time coach Vagnozzi said.
“So let’s not take Alcaraz as a point of reference; he has to go on the road. He often reaches the end in tournaments, and, sooner or later, the opportunity arises.”
Vagnozzi says that they take confidence in the work the team backing Sinner have put in while acknowledging there was still a lot they needed to work on with the player.
“There is still a lot to do and that is the positive aspect,” Vagnozzi added.
“He has important margins and, despite this, he is close to the top-five ranking, he has won eight tournaments, including [an ATP] 1000. This is the aspect that gives us the most comfort.”
Vagnozzi feels that the success Sinner has achieved is just a sampling of what he could go on to do in the game.
He noted how Sinner has improved in many ways.
“The serve has improved, but he has to learn to manage it and to vary it better,” Vagnozzi continued.
“Tactically, sometimes he can make some more variations. Basically, there are still things to fine-tune, but Jannik is so strong that he has already won a lot.”
Vagnozzi feels that Sinner is a match for anyone and his mental game is strong enough that he can beat anyone in the world. He believes that right now, Sinner mainly lacks experience which he will gain from deep runs in tournaments.
He feels that his charge has grown so much in stature as a player recently that he won’t feel inferior to any player whether its a veteran or another young star.
“Sinner does not start off beaten against anyone, but I believe he has a different path from Carlos who, despite being two years younger, is already ahead technically and physically,” the Italian coach declared.
“Definitely, getting to the bottom of tournaments can give you more awareness.”
