Daniil Medvedev in line to complete incredibly unique milestone

Daniil Medvedev in action

Daniil Medvedev is just one match win away from winning a 21st ATP Tour title and achieving a unique milestone.

Incredibly, Medvedev has won 20 titles into 20 different cities and is set to make that 21 if he can come out on top in Beijing.

Medvedev has some massive titles in the bank including the 2021 US Open and the 2020 ATP Tour Finals title.

He also has six Masters championships to his name in six different cities winning in Cincinnati and Shanghai in 2019, Paris in 2020, Toronto in 2021, and this year he has added titles in Miami and Rome.

Incredibly he has never repeated winning a title in the same city twice having also won titles in Dubai, Doha, Rotterdam, Vienna, Los Cabos, Mallorca, Marseille, St. Petersburg, Sofia, Tokyo, and Winston-Salem.

Medvedev was unaware of the statistics and said that he was slightly disappointed to have never defended a title or repeated a victory.

He insists that he is always motivated to win whether he has triumphed in a city before or not.

“Honestly, not really extra motivation,” Medvedev said when made aware of his streak.

“I really want to win every time I step on court.

“So in a way I’m really disappointed that I never managed to defend one of my titles. Talking about the last one, US Open was the first one I could do it, I was in the final.”

Medvedev said that he was happy to come out an deliver a 21st title in a 21st city and hoped to become a repeat winner when he moves on to the already started Shanghai Masters.

“It’s a fun fact. It’s a fun story,” Medvedev added.

“This week I’m here in Beijing, so I hope to make it 21, 21 different cities.

“Yeah, it’s going to be pretty special because I’m not sure anyone has done something like this before,” he said.

Medvedev is the technically also the defending champion at the Shanghai Masters which was last held in 2019 when the Russian came out on top.

“At the same time I hope to, in Shanghai, maybe break this story, try to win a second title in the same city, same tournament,” Medvedev added.

Medvedev will take on Jannik Sinner in the China Open final in Beijing on Wednesday as he seeks a fifth title at the ATP 500 level.
