Alexander Zverev’s recent struggles continued as he was well-beaten by Fabio Fognini at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

The 21-year-old went into the match with a perfect record against Fognini, but was well below his best in the 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 defeat.

“I’m really happy. Happy because I was always losing with him, but it was [also] a really tough match,” Fognini said.

“He’s number three in the world, even if he’s not playing his best tennis. I’m really happy.

“It was not the best match of my career, but it’s very close to my best standard.

“We played in difficult conditions because of the wind. I felt pain on my elbow, but I go on playing”

Fognini will now face Borna Coric in the quarter-finals after the Croatian had far too much for Pierre Hugues Herbert.

Coric never really looked in danger and eased to a 6-4, 6-2 success.

“I was making the right decisions at the right time,” Coric said.

“I was also serving great, so that gave me some confidence when he served that I could be more relaxed.”
