Jannik Sinner is set to miss six ATP Tour tournaments after accepting a three-month ban following his failed doping tests in 2024.

Having twice tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in March last year, Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in August and was allowed to continue playing.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) then appealed against the ITIA ruling as they felt he still had to serve a suspension even if he did not intentionally take clostebol.

The case was due to be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in April, but Sinner’s legal representatives have come to an agreement with WADA as they accepted a three-month suspension with immediate effect.

“Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome,” a statement from the anti-doping agency said.

“As previously stated, WADA did not seek a disqualification of any results, save that which was previously imposed by the tribunal of first instance.”

Sinner is effectively be banned from 9 February until 4 May (his suspension includes a credit for four days previously served while he was under a provisional suspension).

Although he will be able to return to training on 13 April, his first tournament is set to be the Italian Open, which runs from 7-18 May in Rome.

Points Sinner Will Drop

Qatar Open – 500 points*

The Middle East ATP 500 event was next on Sinner’s schedule and it will be the first tournament he will miss. Although he didn’t play in Doha last year, he competed in the Rotterdam Open at the corresponding time last year so will drop 500 points from his 2024 Netherlands title run on 2025/02/17.

Indian Wells Open – 0 points*

This is another tournament with a disclaimer as Sinner reached the semi-final last year so he should be dropping 400 points, but he of course was stripped of his points and prize money from the 2024 tournament after his two failed drug tests.

Miami Open – 1,000 points

Sinner won the second leg of the Sunshine Double in 2024, beating Grigor Dimitrov in the final, and he will drop 1,000 points on 2025/03/31 as per the ATP website.

Monte Carlo Masters – 400 points

The first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the campaign takes place in the Principality and Sinner made it to the semi-final in 2024 before losing to eventual winner Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets.

Barcelona Open – 0 points

Sinner was expected to also play in the ATP 500 event in Barcelona, but will now be ineligible. However, he also didn’t feature last year so doesn’t have any points to defend.

Madrid Open – 200 points

The second ATP 1000 event on clay will be staged in the Spanish capital and Sinner made it to the quarter-final in 2024 before he withdrew due to a hip injury.

Those 200 points will come off on 5 April.

Sinner, who is currently on 11,830 points in the ATP Rankings, will drop 2,100 points over the next three months and that will give his closest rivals Alexander Zverev (8,135) and Carlos Alcaraz (7,510) an opportunity to close the gap ahead of the French Open and Wimbledon.

The good news for Sinner is that he will return for the Italian Open and he doesn’t have any points to defend at the tournament.
