Juan Martin del Potro will not return at the Australian Open as previously planned, it has been confirmed.
Reports from Argentina last week suggested Del Potro had made the decision to delay his comeback from injury, but it has now been made official.
“Our two-time quarter-finalist Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from AusOpen 2020 as he continues to recover from a knee injury,” the Australian Open tweeted from their official account.
“Wishing you all the best with your recovery. We hope to see you back in Australia soon.”
Del Potro has suffered a horrendous time with injuries throughout his career, but the last twelve months have proven some of the very toughest.
He started 2019 with a fractured kneecap, but battled himself back to fitness ahead of the grass court season.
It was hoped the softer ground would provide a kinder environment in which to ease himself back to fitness, but he suffered a recurrence, re-fracturing the kneecap at Queen’s in June.
Those troubles has seen Del Potro sink to 120 in the world rankings.
