Kei Nishikori up and running as Denis Shapovalov upsets Hyeon Chung

Local hero Kei Nishikori had no problems booking his place in the second round of the Japan Open on Monday.
The third seed won his all-Japanese first-round encounter against Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-1.

Next up for Nishikori is Benoit Paire after the Frenchman beat Nicolas Jarry from Chile 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
Denis Shapovalov, meanwhile, accounted for seventh seed Hyeon Chung’s exit as the Canadian beat the Australian Open semi-finalist 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Fourth seed Diego Schwartzman also crashed out as he was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Russian Daniil Medvedev, who will face Martin Klizan next after the Slovakian beat Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
