Matteo Berrettini makes an announcement ahead of the French Open

Matteo Berrettini has given up on his effort to get fit for the French Open and is setting his sights on the UK grass court season next month.

The Italian star has been battling a wrist injury for some time and underwent surgery on the problem in March, with his planned comeback on clay courts now abandoned.

Berrettini has plenty of points to defend on the grass courts, after winning the Queen’s Club championships last year and then reaching the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

Now he is aiming to repeat those heroics, after confirming he is out of contention to play in Paris.

“Following a very positive update from my medical team, I am now back on-court training at a high level,” he wrote on his Instagram account.

“My hand is feeling great and I am working hard to build up my match fitness.

“My team and I have made the decision that going straight back into five-set matches on clay at Roland Garros would not be sensible, therefore I will delay my comeback to compete in the full grass season.”

Berrettini will now be targeting a return to the Queen’s Club event in London next month, with his wrist problem still clearly a concern.
