Novak Djokovic reportedly denied exemption to enter United States and Joe Biden told to ‘fix this NOW’

Novak Djokovic won’t compete at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open as his request for a special entry exemption to the United States has been rejected, according to reports.

Under current regulations, Djokovic is not allowed to enter the US due to his unvaccinated status as the country’s Covid-19 restrictions will only be lifted in May.

It effectively ruled him out of the Sunshine Double with the Indian Wells Open main draw starting on March 8 and the Miami Open kicking off on March 20, but paved the way for him to return to America for the US Open later this year.

However, the world No 1 remained on the entry list for both tournaments and announced early in February that he had applied for a special exemption to enter the United States.

“I’m waiting for a reply, it’s not on me. I will know soon,” he said. “Everything is in process. I’m thankful to the Indian Wells and Miami tournament and communities for their support publicly.”

He received the backing of officials with Indian Wells Tournament Director Tommy Haas pretty vocal in his support as he said it would be a “disgrace” if the 22-time Grand Slam winner was not allowed to play.

And on Friday United States tennis chiefs also announced their public backing, saying “The USTA and US Open are hopeful that Novak is successful in his petition to enter the country, and that the fans will be able to see him back in action at Indian Wells and Miami.”

However, United States Senator Rick Scott has revealed that the application was unsuccessful with the Department of Homeland Security, but it might not be the end of the drama as the politician demanded that United States President Joe Biden intervenes.

“🚨 BREAKING: We have been told that @DHSgov just denied @DjokerNole’s vaccine waiver request, making him ineligible to compete in the US next week in CA & in the @MiamiOpen.

“@JoeBiden must fix this NOW, grant the waiver & allow him to compete here in the states.”

Djokovic insisted during the Dubai Tennis Championships this week that he will accept whatever decision is made.

“Whatever the decision is, if I’m not allowed, I’m going to pull out, of course, before the draw, ” he said.

“Let’s see what the answer is, then I’ll take it from there.”
