Roger Federer recovery ‘on right track’ as he confirms he is likely to make comeback at Australian Open

Roger Federer has given a fitness update following his double knee surgery earlier this year, saying he remains on track to play at next year’s Australian Open.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in mid-February, but was expected to return to action in June. However, he suffered a setback and was forced to undergo a second operation, which resulted in him calling a premature end to his 2020 season.
The Swiss, who turned 39 in August, is determined to return to the ATP Tour next year with the Australian Open pencilled in as his return tournament.
“I’m on the right track, I’m gradually coming back, but don’t put any pressure on myself and will take my time,” he told Schweizer Illustrierte.
“I will only enter a tournament when I am one hundred per cent fit. It currently looks like I can make my comeback at the Australian Open in January.”
He added: “[Hitting] more than two hours with the racket are not possible at the moment. But I’ve been working on my stamina and strength and I have been absolutely painlessly for a while. There will be no further operations.”
