Roger Federer to skip Miami Open as he opts to ‘slowly work his way back’ following injury

Roger Federer won’t defend his Miami Open title at the end of March with his agent confirming he will ease his way back into competitive tennis after his long injury layoff.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner last featured on the ATP Tour at the 2020 Australian Open as he underwent knee surgery in February last year before being forced to have a second operation in May.
After withdrawing from the 2021 Australian Open, Federer finally confirmed that he would return to action at next week’s Doha Open while he also signed up for the Dubai Tennis Championships.
Roger Federer sends his fans into a frenzy with Twitter post ahead of his return to action
Many expected him to enter the mandatory ATP Masters 1000 Miami Open where he is the defending champion, but he won’t feature and will lose 1000 ATP Ranking points as a result.
“After Doha and maybe Dubai, (Federer) will go back and do a training block to continue to slowly work his way back out on Tour,” his agent Tony Godsick wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
Federer has dropped to No 5 in the ATP Rankings with Novak Djokovic, who equaled his record of 310 weeks at the top of the rankings, as well as Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem all ahead of him.
