Carlos Alcaraz edges closer to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer’s streaks with latest win

Novak Djokovic’s record for the longest winning streak at the Indian Wells Open remains safe for at least another year, but Carlos Alcaraz has moved up to third for unbeaten runs at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Two-time defending champion Alcaraz continued his impressive spell at the first leg of the Sunshine Double with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Denis Shapovalov and he is now 18-2 in terms of his all-time record at the tournament.
But the four-time Grand Slam winner will have to go all the way and win a third consecutive Indian Wells title this year if he is to remain in the hunt to surpass the great Djokovic’s unbeaten streak.
The 4 longest winning streaks at Indian Wells:
4. Lleyton Hewitt – 13
After losing early in his first three visits to California, Hewitt reached the semi-final in 2001 before starting his unbeaten run the following year.
There were no byes for the seeds in 2005 and the Australian won six matches in a row, beating Pete Sampras in the semi-final and Tim Henman in the final, to lift the title. He successfully defended his title in 2006 as he defeated Gustavo Kuerten in the final.
The top seeds had byes in 2006 and Hewitt won his second-round match against Thomas Johansson to move to 13 straight wins before his run was ended by Juan Igancio Chela in the third round.
3. Carlos Alcaraz – 14
It is 14 not out for Alcaraz and he has a chance to improve on that record in the coming days.
The Spaniard started his Indian Wells career with a second-round defeat in 2021 before losing in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal the following year.
He went all the way in 2023, beating Jannik Sinner in the semi-final and Daniil Medvedev in the final for title No 1 at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Seeded second in 2024, Alcaraz beat Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final, Sinner in the last four before again getting the better of Medvedev in the final.
With his wins in the second round and third round of the 2025 edition, he is up to 14 wins in a row.
If he does indeed win a third consecutive title this year, then he will draw level with Federer in second place before having a go at the Djokovic milestone in 2026.

2. Roger Federer – 18
Swiss Maestro Federer initially held the record as his unbeaten run took place from 2004 to 2006.
Having lost in the second round in 2003, Federer won the first of his five Indian Wells titles the following year as he defeated Andre Agassi in the semi-final and Henman in the final.
Title No 2 followed with Hewitt the last man beaten in the showpiece final before he made it a hat-trick in California with victory over James Blake in the final.
Federer was the hot favourite to win a fourth consecutive title in 2007, but he was stunned by Guillermo Canas in the second round as the lucky loser from Argentina won in straight sets.
1. Novak Djokovic
The 24-time Grand Slam winner won titles in 2008 and 2012 in Indian Wells before starting his incredible unbeaten streak in 2014 with a hat-trick of trophies.
Djokovic defeated Federer in three sets in the 2014 final and there was a rematch the following year with the Serbian again getting the better of his Big Three rival. During the 2016 tournament, he beat Rafael Nadal in the semi-final and Milos Raonic in the final.
He won his opening two matches in 2017 before losing against Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round.
*Djokovic had a walkover against Bernard Tomic in the quarter-final of the 2015 edition.
