The top-ranked player on the ATP Tour is the man who, over the previous 52 weeks, has garnered the most ranking points at events, but this system has evolved over the years.

Roger Federer holds the record for the longest single reign at 237 consecutive weeks at No 1.

However, here we look at the players who have ascended to the top of the rankings the most times.

Rafael Nadal 8

Nadal first became world No 1 in August 2008 and held the position for 46 weeks.

His second stint at No 1 has been his longest to date with that stretching out to 56 weeks on top.

The shortest of his stints at the top came in the 2018 a season when he slipped off the No 1 ranking four times. Four weeks is the shortest time that Nadal would spend on top of the rankings.

Ivan Lendl 8

Included in Ivan Lendl’s eight reigns as World No 1 are two 1-week stints at the top.

His seventh run with the No 1 ranking was the third longest stint at the top by any player.

Lendl is one of only three players to enjoy two stints at the top that were longer than 80 weeks.

Jimmy Connors 9

Connors also had several short stints at the top in his nine but is best known for his first spell at the top.

He stayed on top for 160 weeks in his first stint as world No 1, with only Federer enjoying a longer first run.

Connors was in the top ranking spot mix for about nine years of his career.

Novak Djokovic 10

The current world No 1 and the man with the most weeks atop the rankings of all is Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic’s shortest spell at the top came in the last season during his duel with Carlos Alcaraz, with the Serbian on top from 12 June until 25 June.

Djokovic might well move up on this list before his career is over.

Pete Sampras 11

Pete Sampras is another player with two runs as No 1 that last longer than 80 weeks but he also had quite a few short spells at the top.

He battled the likes of Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Thomas Muster, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya and more for the top ranking in memorable seasons through the late 1990s.

Sampras put together 11 runs at the top of the ATP Rankings but would not be the all-time record holder.

John McEnroe 14

That honour goes to Sampras’ compatriot and forebear, John McEnroe, who bounced in and out of the top slot far more than anyone else could muster.

His first spell at the top started in March 1980, and he last held the top ranking in September 1985, just five years later.

However, in that time, he held the No 1 ranking a total of 14 times, and he also holds the record for the most single-week reigns at the top with four separate seven-day stretches.
