Toni Nadal gives update on Rafael Nadal’s latest comeback date

Rafael Nadal in action

Rafael Nadal hopes to return to action by the end of October, according to his uncle and former coach Toni Nadal.

The world No 1 announced last week that he would skip the Asian swing as he is still recovering from the knee injury he picked up during his run to the US Open semi-final.

It means he will not only miss next week’s China Open, which is an ATP 500 event, but also the Shanghai Masters tournament, which starts on October 8.

However, he could be back for the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, the Paris Masters.

“In the last conversation we had Rafa told me that he will be back in Paris and that he won’t play the Asian swing because he would not be ready to compete,” Toni Nadal said.

“There is no reason to force the return. He already has experience and if he forces it gets complicated. At 32 years what he needs to do is what he is doing, taking care and not being in a rush.”

Nadal himself admitted that he needs to learn from his mistakes and not force the issue when he is injured.

“It’s important to learn from mistakes and know when to stop in order to avoid more serious thing,” he said.

“I am sportsman and the goal is to reach the limit in all the aspects, and the limit between being able and not be able is split by a very soft line during which you can make a mistake.

“This year I had a very cautious schedule and despite it I suffered two hard injuries.

“Coming back from injuries gives you an enormous satisfaction.”
