Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena react after his 100th title milestone
It was a week to remember for Novak Djokovic in Geneva as he not only celebrated his birthday, but also joined the 100 title club in tennis, and his family was there to witness it all.
Djokovic has waited nine months to win his 100th ATP Tour trophy as he won No 99 when he stepped onto the top step of the podium to collect his gold medal in the singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics in August last year.
After missing out on No 100 at the this year’s Miami Open when he finished runner-up to Jakub Mensik, the magical moment finally arrived in Switzerland in a week that was already full of celebrations.
Djokovic turned 38 on May 22 and his wife Jelena and two children – nine-year-old Stefan and seven-year-old Tara – joined in the celebrations in Geneva.
And there were more balloons and confetti two days later as the 24-time Grand Slam winner defeated Hubert Hurkacz 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2) in the final of the ATP 250 event to become only the third player after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer to win 100 ATP titles.
Hurkacz made him sweat as the tennis great said: “I had to work for it, that’s for sure. Hubi was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was.
“Incredible match, 7-6 in the 3rd [set] with, obviously, full stadium and beautiful atmosphere, so I am just grateful to clinch the 100th here.”
But the emotional moment was reserved for Jelena, Stefan and Tara, as well as his coaching team.
“Primarily I want to thank my wife and kids for coming for three days on their school break just to be with me,” he said.
“I love you, thank you very much for coming to see me, for my birthday, for coming to see the family I have in Geneva.
“My team, thank you, not only for being with me in the good times, but also in the bad times. Only you know how difficult it is to sustain this level of craziness from me on the court. I want to thank you for earning, together with me, this victory No 100.”
