Who has won the most Monte Carlo Masters titles?
The Monte Carlo Masters is the current iteration of a tournament that has existed in some guise since 1897.
It is perhaps unsurprising that the Monte Carlo Masters has been dominated by the man who is now the undisputed king of clay.
Rafael Nadal has won the Monte Carlo Masters 11 times and was the first player in the open era to win the title more than three times.
The open-era record had been shared between Ilie Năstase, Bjorn Borg and Thomas Muster, until Nadal popped up and obliterated it.
Nadal joined amateurs Reginald Doherty and Anthony Wilding in passing five titles in Monte Carlo.
He won his first eight titles at Monte Carlo consecutively in an incredible sequence of dominance over the clay of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
Nadal denied Roger Federer a title win in Monte Carlo with three championship match victories over his great rival.
He has also met Novak Djokovic three times in Monte Carlo Masters finals winning two before tasting his first defeat in the championship match in 2013 at the hands of the Serbian.
Djokovic has won the Monte Carlo Masters title twice, while current defending champion Stefanos Tstitsipas is on a winning streak that stretches back to his last loss in Monte Carlo back in 2020.
Nadal sports a 92 percent win rate in matches at the Monte Carlo Masters a record only bettered by his Roland Garros strike-rate of 97 percent.
Monte Carlo is the only Masters tournament not to have a mandatory player commitment but it still regularly attracts the big names.
Nadal also holds the records for most matches played at the Monte Carlo Masters with 79 completed to date.
He went on a 46 match winning streak in Monte Carlo that encompassed eight title wins and nine runs all the way to the final.
His 12 finals appearances are also a record for the event with Nada’s incredible record seeing him lose just six matches out of 79 at the venue.
If and when Nadal next appears at the Monte Carlo Masters he will come into outright possession of the record for most appearannces at the events well.
Currently, Nadal is tied on 17 tournaments apiece with Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.
While Nadal’s participation in 2023 remains in doubt we are set to see former champions Stan Wawrinka and Fabio Fognini in the field after they were handed wildcards alongside Britain’s Jack Draper and the top-ranked Monegasque in the ATP rankings, Valentin Vacherot.
