Former Wimbledon doubles champion Frederik Lochte Nielsen believes that Holger Rune is back to his best and could shock the field at the ATP Finals in Turin.

Rune needed a strong finish to his regular season to keep himself in the top eight in the race, but Nielsen feels his mixed form is now behind him.

The Dane has a tough start ahead of him, facing world No 1 Novak Djokovic in his first group match.

However, Nielsen believes he is a strong candidate to secure the ATP Finals title in what would be his first attempt.

“I believe he has a really good chance of winning it all. He comes in and is confident. I know from myself that if you’ve just gone through a tough period, there’s a crazy amount of extra spirit and joy when you turn it around and feel good again,” Nielsen told SpilXperten.

“In addition, he is playing really well right now. He is on, he is quick on the balls, and he is confident. You can see that it radiates from him, so I have no doubt that he goes to Torino with a completely fresh mind, and I think he is well-equipped to do very well. I have him as one of the top favorites, there is no doubt about that.”

Nielsen feels like Rune might have lost himself in the ATP Tour but seems to feel that his confidence and game have returned.

“As I see it, Holger is himself again. He plays with peace of mind, and that is the biggest difference,” Nielsen added.

“He doesn’t force the game; he builds it up nicely and has confidence in himself. He has simply come out of the period where you couldn’t recognize him.”

“He looks like himself again, and when he looks like himself again, he is just really tough to beat.”

Nielsen believes that Rune is among the most entertaining players in the world right now and has a bright future.

He believes that if Rune plays to his potential then there isn’t a player in the sport right now who could beat him , including the likes of Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

“Personally, I really appreciate Holger a lot because he is so fun to watch play tennis. He is outspoken and does his thing, and he is a fantastic player,” Nielsen said.

“I can’t speak for others, but personally, I believe that even if I weren’t Danish, I would rather watch Holger than many of the other players who are struggling to make it.”

“He has so much more to offer, both in terms of entertainment and tennis skills. Moreover, he is a player who can win the ATP finals when he is in this mood. When he plays like this, I honestly can’t see who he could lose to. I simply think he is so good and has so much to offer.”
