Australian Open offers record prize money with massive purse increase
The world’s top tennis stars will compete for a new record purse at the Australian Open in 2024.
The historic-high prize pool is a result of a record $10 million (13 per cent) increase on AO 2023.
The $AU 86.5 million in prize money put up for the Grand Slam is the most that has ever been on the line in Melbourne.
The Australian Open in 2024 sees prize money increases in every round from the 2023 figures.
Singles champions will take home $3.15 million, and Australian Open prize money has now more than quadrupled in the last 20 years since 2005 when it was $19.1 million.
First round main draw singles players will take home $120,000 up 13 percent from 2023. Meanwhile players reaching the second round will receive $180,000.
“We’ve upped prize money for every round at the Australian Open with the major increases in qualifying and the early rounds of singles and doubles,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.
“It is critical to the continued success of the Australian Open that we ensure that the best players in the world are compensated appropriately as we know this allows players to invest in their own careers and many cases, helps set them up for success throughout the year.
“We want to ensure Australia remains the launchpad for the global tennis season and the players and their teams have everything they need to help them perform at their best and continue to enjoy the Happy Slam.”
Prize money has more than doubled from $40 million in 2015, and of course, the men’s and women’s draws receive the same rewards.
The US. Open was the richest of the Grand Slams in 2023 with a prize fund of US$65 million, while Wimbledon offered a total of 44.7 million pounds ($56.92 million) and the French Open 49.6 million euros ($54.89 million).
The winners take is still more than $1 million less than the last pre-pandemic Australian Open in 2020 won by Novak Djokovic and Sofia Kenin.
