The Emma Raducanu fanbase continues to grow with Nick Kyrgios describing her as “the champ” following her first-round win at the Australian Open.

The teenager has enjoyed a stellar start to her career as she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon during her major main draw debut in 2021 and a few months later she enjoyed a fairytale run at the US Open, becoming the first qualifier – man or woman – to win a Grand Slam.

Having started the year outside the WTA Rankings top 300, she finished inside the top 20.

And she continued where she left off in Grand Slams on Tuesday as she won her first-ever match at Melbourne Park, defeating former US Open champion Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1.

And Kyrgios, who kicked off his Australian Open campaign with an entertaining three-set win over Great Britain’s Liam Broady, applauded her on Twitter, saying “She is the champ!!!!”

During her post match press conference Raducanu spoke about feeding off the crowd.

“I definitely wanted to go out there and start playing aggressively and start putting my game on the court,” the 19-year-old said.

“I felt that I was actually just really enjoying my time here, especially going out to practise earlier, I had quite a few people watching. I think that the crowd that stayed pretty late, we were having a good time. I was feeding off that, for sure.”

The British No 1 will face Danka Kovinic from Montenegro in the second round on Thursday.
