No surprises in Australian Open men’s singles entry list

Novak Djokovic in action

After the announcement that Novak Djokovic would have his visa ban overturned there were no surprises in the Australian Open men’s singles entry list.

As expected the list of men granted main draw entry to the Australian Open is headlined by World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

The entire top ten of the ATP Rankings have entered the Australian Open and this extends as far as the Top 50 in fact.

It remains to be seen if all the entered players are able to make it to Melbourne.

Cameron Norrie heads a five man British contingent that also includes, Dan Evans, Jack Draper, Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund, who enters with the aid of a protected ranking.

Former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka also enters with a protected ranking while Lloyd Harris, Hugo Dellien, Guido Pella and Jeremy Chardy all entered into the main draw in this fashion.

Alcaraz will be the top seed while compatriot Nadal will anchor the draw as the second seed.

Prior to the draw the only guarantees we have are that the Spaniards won’t be able to meet until the final in Melbourne.

The Australian Open singles draw will be conducted during a special event at Margaret Court Arena on Thursday 10 January 2023.

Novak Djokovic is likely to catch the fifth seeding for the tournament which will leave a potential quarter-final booby trap for one of the top four men.

While Nadal is the defending champion, the rest of the top four have a mixed record at the Australian Open.

Casper Ruud’s best effort in Melbourne was his run to the Round of 16 in 2021 while World No 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the last four on three occassions.

While Djokovic might be a distraction for the other top players, the Serb’s pursuit of his tenth title Downunder can only be a success if he maintains his focus in every match.

Djokovic had a very good 2022 but his losses to up-and-coming players like Holger Rune and earlier in the year, Alcaraz will serve as inspiration to the young guns and journeymen alike.

If he can win a record-extending tenth Australian Open title, Djokovic will also draw level with defending champion Nadal on 22 Grand Slams and become the firm favourite to end up as the all-time record holder.

Nadal holds the World No 2 spot but his recent form doesn’t suggest that he will be a force in Australia.

However the same thing could have been said before Nadal won in 2022.

In 2023, the field has a different look to it and a wounded Nadal won’t be able to hold back the tide if he isn’t able to play his best tennis.

The Australian Open starts on 16 January and the men’s singles champion will be crowned on Sunday 29 January.
