Novak Djokovic keeps Australian Open cards close to his chest, saying ‘you will know very soon’

Serbia's Novak Djokovic takes a breather

Novak Djokovic remains non-committal about the 2022 Australian Open with the defending champion refusing to reveal if he will travel to Melbourne to defend his title.

With Tennis Australia confirming that all participants have to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to compete at the season-opening Grand Slam, it has put Djokovic in the spotlight.

Comment – Novak Djokovic may be about to become an anti-vaxxer poster boy

The world No 1 has made no secret of his skepticism of the vaccine while he has insisted that he won’t reveal his vaccination status publicly.

Djokovic’s 2021 season came to an end following Serbia’s exit from the Davis Cup Finals and he was asked about his thoughts for the 2022 season and replied: “Honestly, I’m going to try to use the next days to just rejuvenate, recover, and forget about tennis. So right now I understand you want some answers on where I start the season, how I start it.

“I’m really, really tired from this season and this whole year, so I just prefer sticking to the family quality time, rehab mode, then let’s see what the future brings.”

When pressed further about when he will return to action, he said: “You will be informed. I know what you want. I’m not going to give you an answer [now]. I know what you want to ask me. But you will be informed. That’s all I can tell you. I cannot give you any date.

“Obviously Australia is around the corner, so you will know very soon.”
