WATCH: Novak Djokovic practicing in Spain… and he may have his eye on Australia after all

Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic’s participation at the Australian Open has become a huge talking point in tennis and it seems that he is preparing to play in Melbourne if the green light is given.

All players taking part in the first Grand Slam of 2022 need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and Djokovic has yet to confirm whether he is ready to comply with that rule.

After pulling out of the ATP Cup that is due to get underway this weekend, reports emerged suggesting the Serbian is trying to get a medical exception to play in Australia without a vaccine.

While it remains to be seen whether he will plot a route to Melbourne, a video has emerged of Djokovic practicing on hard courts in Spain at the SotoTennis Academy and he was using Australian Open balls.

Djokovic’s non-appearance at the ATP Cup was a topic discussed by world No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, who confirmed he is happy to follow the guidelines to play in Australia.

“Rules are rules, and they are established for a purpose,” declared the Greek star.

“So if some players decide not to follow them, it’s their choice. I wouldn’t say it’s right or wrong here.

“I followed whatever was necessary in order for me to come into Australia.

“If Djokovic thinks he is not ready to play ATP Cup for whatever reason, it is his choice,” commented the world No.4.

“I think most of the players respect his choice. What can I say? The ATP Cup will lack on a great player this year.”
