WATCH: Daniil Medvedev tells fan to ‘f*** off’ shortly before wrapping up win
Daniil Medvedev is never afraid to make his feelings about spectators known and he was again at it during his first-round match at the 2023 Australian Open.
Taking on Marcos Giron in his opener at Rod Laver Arena on Monday, Medvedev had a relatively straightforward day at the office as he was in cruise control against the American.
The seventh seed secured a 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 victory in one hour and 36 minutes, but there was a bit of drama right at the end when he was trying to serve out the match at 5-2 (40-40).
Medvedev did not take kindly to being heckled and shouted: “F*** off.”
Naturally there were some oohs and aahs from the spectators and Medvedev had an exchange with the chair umpire after he was handed a code violation for audible obscenity.
Eurosport pundit Tim Henman said: “It was a very strange time to react like that. It was a very good performance but a really strange ending with the last two points with his reaction and swearing at someone in the audience. Maybe a bit of afterthought from last year.”
Henman of course was referring to Medvedev’s run-in with spectators in Melbourne in 2022 when he was also unhappy with fans booing him.
“They are idiots. No brains, empty brains. ‘Probably in their life, it must be very bad,” the Russian told the chair umpire last year.
He later added: “It’s not everybody who’s doing it, but those who are doing it probably have a low IQ.”
At the 2019 US Open he was also booed and he told the crowd after a win over Feliciano Lopez: “I want all of you to know when you sleep tonight: I won because of you.”
Medvedev, though, was pleased with his performance against Giron on Monday.
“Really happy with the match, Marcos is a tough opponent and to beat him with this score in the first round of a Slam is great,” he said. “I’m really happy about my level.”
Up next is John Milman from Australia.
“In five or six years that I have been on the Tour, I have never played [Millman]. He is a great player, especially here in Australia” the seventh seed said. “He is a great player. He beat Roger [Federer] at the US Open when Roger was at the top, so he is capable of playing some great tennis. I am going to have to play my best as well.”
