WATCH: Emotional Serena Williams’ post-match press conference as tennis great leaves room in tears
Serena Williams bowed out of the 2021 Australian Open on Thursday as she suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of Naomi Osaka.
In a repeat of the 2018 US Open final, pre-tournament favourite and world No 3 Osaka once again got the better of the 23-time Grand Slam winner as she won 6-3, 6-4.
It means Williams’ search for a record-equalling 24th major title continues and she broke down during the post-match press conference at Melbourne Park.
When asked if her wave to the spectators at Rod Laver Arena after the match was her saying goodbye, she replied: “I don’t know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn’t tell anyone. So… I don’t know. I’m done.”
