Jannik Sinner started the 2024 ATP Tour season at No 4 in the ATP Rankings and finished the campaign at No 1, but there were plenty of winners and losers in the rankings over the past year.

The 23-year-old Sinner surged to the top of the ATP Rankings after the French Open and he has remained at No 1 since then as he has been the dominant figure on the ATP Tour.

The Italian finished 2023 with 6,490 ranking points, but he nearly doubled that total this year as he will end with 11,830 points. At one stage he had 11,920 points, which was the fifth-highest total ever during an ATP Tour season.

The bulk of this year’s points came at the Australian Open (2,000), US Open (2,000), ATP Finals (1,500) and three ATP Masters tournaments (3,000 in total).

The two-time Grand Slam winner finished the year 3,915 points ahead of second-placed Alexander Zverev, who also moved up several spots this year as he was down at No 7 at the start of 2024.

Last year’s season-ending No 1 Novak Djokovic was a bit of a loser in terms of the rankings in the top 10 as he slipped six places to No 7 – his lowest position in more than two years.

That, though, can be attributed to the fact that he opted to play a reduced schedule in 2024 and he won only one title – gold at the Paris Olympics.

Stefanos Tsitsipas looked set for a big year, but he went off the boil along with Holger Rune as they dropped out of the top 10, sitting at No 11 and No 13 respectively, while Ben Shelton is now at No 21.

On the flip side, Taylor Fritz enjoyed a brilliant 2024 season as he finished at a career-high No 4 following runners-up finishes at the US Open and the ATP Finals. He is the first American man to finish in the top five since James Blake in 2006.

Just outside the top 10, Jack Draper was at No 61 in January but the British No 1 won his maiden title in Stuttgart in June and followed it up with the Vienna Open in October while he also made the US Open semi-final.

His reward is a career-best No 15 in the season-ending rankings.

Selected Big Winners

French youngster Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard started the year at No 205 before winning his first title in May. He then backed it up with the Swiss Indoors trophy later in the year to finish at No 31 – a 174-place gain.

Brandon Nakashima currently sits seven places below Perricard after rising 96 places over the past year while Luciano Darderi climbed from No 128 to No 44.

Jakub Mensik also enjoyed a breakthrough year as he finished at No 49 after starting at No 167 while Juncheng Shang sits at No 51, having been at No 183 in January.

As always, the lower you go down the rankings the bigger the jumps with Kei Nishikori regaining some form during the final few months after 2024 after struggling with injury. The former world No 4 has climbed to No 105 after finding himself at No 353 earlier in the year.

Teenage sensation Joao Fonseca became the first Brazilian junior world No 1 in 2023 and he followed it up with another incredible year.

The 18-year-old kicked off the campaign at No 730, but earned a couple of Masters match wins and won two ATP Challenger Tour titles to rise 585 places to No 145.

He is just ahead of Rafael Nadal, who returned to action this year after an injury-hit 2023 season. Nadal was at No 672 in January, but sits at No 154.

The Spaniard, though, will drop out of the rankings next year as he will retire after this week’s Davis Cup Finals.

Selected Losers

Chris Eubanks enjoyed a superb 2023 season as he reached a career-best 29 before finishing at No 34. Sadly, he was unable to back it up this year and has slipped out of the top 100 with his current position No 107.

Aslan Karatsev was one position below Eubanks in January, but the Russian has fared even worse than the American as he has dropped 254 places to no 289.

Dan Evans, Mackenzie McDonald 41 and Stan Wawrinka have also left the top 100. Evans slipped from 38 to 166, McDonald is at 132 after starting at 41 while Wawrinka is now at 163, slipping from 49th.
