The 5 men with the most Barcelona Open match wins: Rafael Nadal with 67

The Barcelona Open is one of the most famous clay court events – and is a tournament that has consistently attracted the very best names in tennis.
With this year’s tournament underway, we look at the five men to have won the most matches at the event, with no surprises for guessing who sits at the very top…
=4) Guillermo Vilas – 30 wins
Clay-court great Vilas was a stalwart at the Barcelona Open across his career, making his event debut in 1973 and his final appearance in 1987.
Somehow, the Argentine was never quite able to get his hands on the title, losing in four straight finals – beaten by Ivan Lendl in 1980 and 1981, and Mats Wilander in 1982 and 1983.
However, the former world No 2 was still able to record an impressive 30 match wins at the tournament, ranking him joint-fourth in the event’s history.
=4) David Ferrer – 30 wins
Much like Vilas, former world No 3 Ferrer reached the Barcelona Open final four times and yet never triumphed at his home tournament.
That was largely down to Rafael Nadal, who beat his compatriot in the 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012 finals at the ATP 500 event.
Ferrer made his first Barcelona Open appearance in 2003 and his last in 2019, matching Vilas with 30 match wins at the tournament.
3) Carlos Moya – 32 wins
One of the leading Spanish players of his generation, former world No 1 Moya triumphed at the Barcelona Open in 2003, lifting the title after Marat Safin retired injured in the final.
That was a second Barcelona Open final for Moya, who had finished as the runner-up in 2001, and the Spaniard contested the tournament every year from 1996 until 2008.
In total, he recorded an impressive 32 match wins at the tournament, a stat that only two men in event history can beat.
2) Manuel Orantes – 47 wins
One of the greatest Spanish players of all time, former world No 2 Orantes won three Barcelona Open titles at the peak of his powers.
The Spaniard beat Manuel Santana in the final of the 1969 event – the first of the Open Era – and would win further titles in 1971 and 1976, defeating Bob Lutz and Eddie Dibbs, respectively.
Orantes also reached a further four finals, finished as the runner-up from 1972-74, and again in 1977.
His record of 47 wins comfortably puts him in second place, 15 wins ahead of Moya in third.

1) Rafael Nadal – 67
There is no surprise to see that Nadal, the winner of 12 Barcelona Open titles, is well out in front as the No 1 on this countdown.
Nadal won five straight titles from 2005-09 and then three further titles from 2011-13, before another ‘three-peat’ from 2016 to 2018.
The Spaniard claimed his 12th and final title in 2021, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling three-set final.
In total, Nadal won a staggering 67 matches at the tournament – tasting defeat just five times in his 17 tournament appearances.
