Carlos Alcaraz improved his remarkable record against elite opposition by edging out Jannik Sinner in three pulsating sets in the 2024 China Open final.

The four-time Grand Slam champion earned a 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3) victory against the world No 1 at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing.

At three hours and 21 minutes, the epic battle was the longest match in the history of the China Open and the second longest ATP Tour final of 2024 after the Hamburg Open title match.

Alcaraz spoke about the impact of his rivalry with Sinner after recording his sixth win against the 23-year-old Italian in the pair’s 10th match.

“When Jannik and I play against each other, I think it’s a great thing for tennis: we always have a very intense, even match, with great points and great exchanges,” said the 21-year-old.

“I think that thanks to these kinds of matches, people who don’t watch tennis start watching matches and even training. That, I think, is great. I try to enjoy as much as possible when I play against Jannik, but it’s not easy.”

By beating Sinner for the third time in as many encounters in 2024, Alcaraz reinforced just how well he performs against the best players in the world.
