The 4 countries to win Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup in same year since 1990: Italy join list
Four countries have now managed to win the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup double in the same year since 1990.
The Davis Cup has been running since 1900 while the first edition of the Federation Cup – as the Billie Jean King Cup was previous known as – was played in 1963.
This year marks the 61st year that both team competitions have run concurrently, and four times since 1990 the same country managed to win the premier international men’s and women’s team events in the same year.
The United States have managed to win the Davis Cup and Fed Cup/Billie Jean King Cup the most as the men’s team have lifted the Davis Cup trophy 32 times and the women won the Billie Jean King Cup 18 times.
Unsurprisingly, the United States are one nation to achieve the historic double feat and they last did so in 1990.
Back in July 1990, Jennifer Capriati, Zina Garrison-Jackson and Gigi Fernandez combined to give the Americans a 2-1 win over the Soviet Union in the Fed Cup/Billie Jean King Cup final in Georgia.
It was the United States’ 14th title.
Five months later an American squad consisting of Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Rick Leach and Jim Pugh defeated Australia 3-2 in St. Petersburg, Florida, to hand the US their 29th Davis Cup title.
And for the first time in history, a country achieved the Davis Cup-Fed Cup/Billie Jean King Cup double.
Over two decades later, the Czech Republic matched their achievement.
The men sealed the first of two consecutive Davis Cup titles in 2012, while the nation’s leading female players won the second of six BJK Cup titles they would win in 2010.
The Davis Cup team starred the likes of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek, while Petra Kvitova led the BJK Cup squad.
