Winning the WTA Finals title on multiple occasions has proven a difficult task in recent years.

While 10 women in tournament history have won the event more than once, no player has achieved repeat triumphs since Serena Williams won her fifth and final title in 2014.

With the 2024 year-end championships underway, we look at the last eight women to triumph at the Finals – with Iga Swiatek hoping to become a rare repeat champion.

2015: Agnieszka Radwanska

With three-time defending champion Williams withdrawing pre-event, Radwanska made the most of an open draw to capture the biggest title of her career.

The former world No 2 lost group stage matches to Maria Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta, though victory over Simona Halep was enough to send her through to the last four.

Radwanska then toppled Garbine Muguruza in a three-set thriller to reach the final, where she battled past former champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to claim the title.

2016: Dominika Cibulkova

Much like Radwanska, Cibulkova lifted the biggest title of her career despite tasting defeat in two of her three group matches.

The Slovakian was beaten by Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys but defeated Halep to seal her place in the semi-finals.

Former world No 4 Cibulkova then fought past Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets, before getting revenge in the final against Kerber – beating the world No 1 6-3, 6-4.

2017: Caroline Wozniacki

Having previously lost the final in 2010, a resurgent Wozniacki captured what was at the time the biggest title of her career with victory in 2017.

The Dane was beaten by Caroline Garcia in the group stage, but emphatic wins over Halep and Elina Svitolina proved more than enough to progress.

Wozniacki then defeated Karolina Pliskova to reach the championship match, where she downed Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 to claim the title in Singapore.

2018: Elina Svitolina

Former world No 3 Svitolina won the biggest title of her career at the year-end championships in 2018, not losing a match on her way to victory.

The Ukrainian was imperious in the group stage, beating Kvitova in straight sets and claiming three-set victories over both Wozniacki and Pliskova.

Svitolina then battled past Kiki Bertens in an epic semi-final, before rallying to beat Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

2019: Ashleigh Barty

Barty matched her idol Evonne Goolagong to become just the second Australian woman to lift the WTA Finals, thanks to her triumph in 2019.

The former world No 1 topped her group thanks to wins over Belinda Bencic and Kvitova, with a sole defeat to Bertens.

She then rallied from a set down to defeat Pliskova in the last four, before downing defending champion Svitolina 6-4, 6-3.

2021: Garbine Muguruza

After the tournament was cancelled in 2020, the event returned in 2021 with Muguruza capturing the 10th and final title of her career.

Despite a loss to Pliskova, victories over Anett Kontaveit and Barbora Krejcikova were enough for the sixth seed to progress in second place.

Muguruza then beat compatriot Paula Badosa to reach the final, where the former world No 1 once again defeated Kontaveit to lift the title, prevailing 6-3, 7-5.

2022: Caroline Garcia

One of the more surprising tournament champions, former world No 4 Garcia upset the odds to win the biggest title of her career two years ago.

Despite a group stage loss to Swiatek, the Frenchwoman defeated both Coco Gauff and Daria Kasatkina to seal her spot in the last four.

Garcia stormed past Maria Sakkari to progress to the championship match, where she overcame Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4), 6-4 to triumph.

2023: Iga Swiatek

Swiatek’s run to the title in Cancun 12 months ago was flawless, with the Pole not dropping a set on her way to victory.

The former world No 1 dropped just 14 games across her group stage matches, dispatching Gauff, Ons Jabeur, and Marketa Vondrousova without facing too many issues.

She then eased past Sabalenka in the last four, before thrashing Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-0 to lift the title.
