Iga Swiatek returned to winning ways in close-to-unstoppable fashion thanks to an impressive Wimbledon title run this fortnight.

The Pole handed out a historic double bagel in her final against Amanda Anisimova inside Centre Court, and dropped just one set on her way to lifting the title at the All England Club for the first time.

Swiatek is now one of just eight women to win Grand Slam titles on hard, clay, and grass courts, and is now the winner of six Grand Slam singles titles overall.

The former world No 1 is currently the only woman in the Open Era to have won exactly six major singles titles, though she has now officially moved ahead of two all-time greats in the standings.

And, she is in touching distance of three more tennis legends whom she could emulate soon.

Ahead of Sharapova and Hingis

Incredibly, Swiatek’s sixth major moves her ahead of tennis legends and former world No 1’s Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis, with whom she was previously level with on five titles.

Hingis was famously only 16 when she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open titles in 1997, with further Australian Open titles to her name in 1998 and 1999.

Sharapova remains the last woman to complete the Career Grand Slam, with her 2004 Wimbledon, 2006 US Open, and 2008 Australian Open triumphs followed by Roland Garros success in 2012 and 2014.

Swiatek’s Wimbledon triumph comes after winning the 2022 US Open title, and four Roland Garros triumphs in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

While the Pole has overtaken them in the Grand Slam standings, she is still short of Sharapova and Hingis overall major singles final appearances, with 10 and 12 finals, respectively.

Who could be next?

Swiatek is the only woman in the Open Era to have won exactly six Grand Slam singles titles, as previously mentioned, though three women could be directly in her sights.

Tennis icons Evonne Goolagong, Venus Williams, and Justine Henin all won seven Grand Slam singles titles, and the Pole is now just one major title away from drawing level with them.

An Australian tennis icon, Goolagong won her home major in 1974, 1975, and 1976, before returning to win the (Dec) 1977 title.

She was also a Wimbledon champion in 1971 and 1980 and a French Open winner in 1971, with a further 11 major singles final appearances to her name.

Williams is most notable for her five Wimbledon triumphs, claiming the title in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2008, though she claimed back-to-back US Open triumphs in 2000 and 2001.

The American also reached a further nine Grand Slam finals, with seven of those defeats coming at the hands of her younger sister, Serena.

Belgian star Henin, much like Swiatek, found most of her success at Roland Garros, winning the title in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

She was also a US Open champion in 2003 and 2007, and the Australian Open winner in 2004, with a further five runner-up finishes at Grand Slam events to her name.

Open Era standings

Swiatek’s sixth Grand Slam title means that only 10 women in the Open Era have won Grand Slam titles than her.

That includes Goolagong, Williams, and Henin, and the likes of Billie Jean King and Margaret Court, whose success spanned the amateur and professional ages.

Serena Williams leads the way with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, with Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert following on.

In the 21st century, only Serena (22 of 23), Venus (7), and Henin (7) have won more Grand Slam women’s singles titles than Swiatek.

1) Serena Williams – 23
2) Steffi Graf – 22
