Jakub Mensik & Joao Fonseca match incredible Djokovic & Murray feat at Australian Open

It is the teenager’s time to shine at the Australian Open.
Two of the youngest players in the men’s singles draw have made some of the biggest headlines, with Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik starring in Melbourne.
Brazilian star Fonseca stunned ninth seed Andrey Rublev in round one on Tuesday, while Mensik showcased his qualities in a four-set win over sixth seed Casper Ruud on Wednesday.
The pair have now emulated former teen stars – and future tennis greats – Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in achieving a staggering feat.
This is the first time since Djokovic and Murray at Wimbledon in 2006 that two teenagers have beaten top-10 players at the same Grand Slam tournament.
Mensik and Fonseca’s impressive double
The pathway to this milestone was set on Tuesday by Fonseca, who delivered a scintillating performance to shock world No 9 Rublev inside the Margaret Court Arena.
Teenager Fonseca, who does not turn 19 until August, was playing his first Grand Slam main draw match and had come through qualifying to seal his spot at the tournament.
It was he who looked by far the most experienced on the court though, producing his best tennis to claim a memorable 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-6(5) win over the former world No 5.
Less than 24 hours later, 19-year-old Mensik joined his Brazilian counterpart by making history.
The Czech’s victory over world No 6 Ruud was less surprising, with many picking Mensik pre-match to beat the three-time major finalist and former world No 2.
However, the manner of it was certainly impressive; after dropping the second set, he bounced back tremendously to seal a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win.
It was the fifth top-10 win over Mensik’s career, having twice beaten both Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov in 2024, and he now holds an impressive 5-4 record against the top 10.

Djokovic and Murray – 2006 Wimbledon
2006 was the second Wimbledon appearance for both Djokovic and Murray, with their respective debuts having come the previous summer.
Unseeded, Djokovic made the second week of Wimbledon for the first time, with 11th seed Tommy Robredo among those to fall to the Serbian.
World No 8 Robredo could do little to trouble the 19-year-old, who sealed a 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-4 in this second-round clash.
It was the third top-10 win of his career and the Serbian almost caused another upset, pushing Mario Ancic to five sets in the fourth round before losing to the seventh seed.
Much like his great rival, Murray was also beaten in the fourth round – though picked up one of the biggest wins of his career on his way to that point.
The Brit booked a third-round meeting versus third seed Andy Roddick, who had reached the final the past two years.
Murray had beaten Roddick to earn his first top-10 win earlier that season and he again proved too strong for the world No 5, stunning the American 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4.
He would lose to 18th seed Marcos Baghdatis but, much like with Djokovic, the foundations were set for a legendary career.
What next for Fonseca and Mensik?
Having only played his opener on Tuesday, Fonseca returns to the court for his second-round match on Thursday.
The Brazilian faces world No 55 Lorenzo Sonego, who he beat in their only previous meeting in Bucharest last season.
Meanwhile, Mensik will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round.
