Jannik Sinner emulates Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi with superb feat at Australian Open

Jannik Sinner has become the fourth player this century to accomplish an impressive hard-court Grand Slam feat as he started his Australian Open title defence with a victory.
The world No 1 earned a 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1 win against world No 36 Nicolas Jarry in the opening round of the year’s first major.
The Italian star was not broken in the match, saving the only two break points he faced, while he won 83% of points behind his first serve and 70% on his second delivery.
Sinner was playing his first match of the 2025 season, and his triumph extended his winning streak to 15 matches — a run that started at the Shanghai Masters in October. He has now won 29 consecutive sets.
“I’m very happy to be back. Thank you so much for coming. The atmosphere was amazing. I think today was a very close one,” he said in an on-court interview.
“He’s an incredible player. Huge potential. I’m happy with how I handled a tough situation in the first couple of sets. Happy to be in the next round.”

Jannik Sinner v Carlos Alcaraz – former world No 1 picks who will win the most Grand Slams
Sinner, who won both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2024, has now won 15 straight Grand Slam matches on hard courts.
The 23-year-old is the fourth man since 2000 to achieve this many successive wins on the surface following Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Asked about the statistic in his press conference, Sinner said: “It’s amazing to be next to these names. I cannot compare myself with these players, no?
“They have done so, so many things. I’m just trying to make my own little story. Happy about that.
“I like hard courts. I like these conditions. Especially when it’s not that hot like today, it’s very nice to play. Yeah, so happy how I’m trying to keep going as much as I can.”
Sinner will play 23-year-old Australian wildcard and world No 173 Tristan Schoolkate in the second round at Melbourne Park.
The two-time Grand Slam winner is aiming to become the 11th man to defend the Australian Open title in the Open Era.
The Italian is a strong favourite to prevail in Melbourne given his hard-court prowess and the fact he will not have to face Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev until the final.
