The 7 men to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’: Novak Djokovic 4 times, Roger Federer 3

Having triumphed in Indian Wells, can Jack Draper now lift the Miami Open title – and complete the ‘Sunshine Double’?
Only seven men have been able to achieve the impressive feat – with only two having done so on multiple occasions.
Jim Courier – 1991
Shortly before winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, Courier sealed a stunning breakthrough by triumphing in both Indian Wells and Miami in 1991.
The 16th seed in Indian Wells, Courier thrashed Michael Stich in the last four before a battling 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) triumph over third seed Guy Forget in the final.
Seeded 13th in Miami, the American again beat Forget in the fourth round and went on to defeat compatriot David Wheaton 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match to lift the title.
These were the first two of five Masters 1000 triumphs for Courier, and he claimed the Indian Wells title for a second time in 1993.
Michael Chang – 1992
Twelve months after Courier, Chang matched his compatriot by becoming the second man to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’.
Chang was the 12th seed in Indian Wells and was pushed to three sets in his first three matches, though would defeat Andrei Chesnokov 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the final to triumph in Tennis Paradise.
Seeded sixth in Miami, the American defeated fourth seed Pete Sampras and top seed – and defending champion – Courier in back-to-back matches, before beating Alberto Mancini 7-5, 7-5 to claim victory.
The former French Open champion never again lifted the Miami Open title, though went on to win Indian Wells in 1996 and 1997.
Pete Sampras – 1994
Sampras became the third man – and third American – to achieve the ‘Sunshine Double’ with his sensational run to the title in 1994.
The top seed beat both Thomas Muster and Stefan Edberg on his way to the title in Indian Wells, battling past 10th seed Petr Korda 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final to triumph.
Having previously won the 1993 Miami Open, Sampras successfully defended his title – and completed the double – with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andre Agassi in the championship match.
Sampras would successfully defend his Indian Wells title in 1995 and claimed a third Miami Open title in 2000.
Marcelo Rios – 1998
Rios was the first non-American to win the ‘Sunshine Double’ and remains the only non-Grand Slam winner – male or female – to complete the feat.
The Chilean started with an impressive run in the desert, the seventh seed beating second seed Korda in the last eight before a final victory over Greg Rusedski, defeating the Brit 6-3, 6-7(15), 7-6(4), 6-4.
Rios was then the third seed in Miami and eased his way to the title, beating 29th seed Agassi 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to triumph.
The former world No 1 would never again triumph at either tournament, though claimed five Masters 1000 titles across his career.
Andre Agassi – 2001
Playing some of the best tennis of his career in the early 2000s, tennis icon Agassi finally completed the ‘Sunshine Double’ in 2001.
Having lost the Indian Wells final in 1990 and 1995, the fourth seed sealed his first title at the tournament by beating Lleyton Hewitt in the last four and then key rival Sampras 7-6(5), 7-5.
Agassi would then ease his way to what was a fourth Miami Open title the following fortnight, defeating Pat Rafter in the semi-final, and then 19th seed Jan-Michael Gambill 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-0 in the final.
The former world No 1 had previously lifted the Miami Open title in 1990, 1995, and 1996, and would complete a successful three-peat with victories in 2002 and 2003.

Roger Federer – 2005-06, 2017
Federer was the first man to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ on multiple occasions and ultimately achieved the feat an impressive three times.
The Swiss first completed the double in 2005, beating Hewitt 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to triumph in Indian Wells and then defeating Rafael Nadal 2-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-1 in a legendary Miami Open final.
Twelve months later, Federer defeated James Blake 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 to again claim victory in Tennis Paradise, and completed a second double with a 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 7-6(6) Miami win versus Ivan Ljubicic.
After an 11-year gap, he completed the feat for a third time in 2017, overcoming compatriot Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 to prevail in Indian Wells, before seeing off Nadal 6-3, 6-4 in Miami.
In total, Federer was a five-time Indian Wells champion and a four-time Miami Open winner.
Novak Djokovic – 2011, 2014-16
Djokovic achieved the feat a staggering four times in total – including in three straight seasons.
The Serbian’s first such double came in 2011, defeating Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Indian Wells final before an epic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) triumph over the Spaniard in Florida.
Three years later, Djokovic battled past Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) to triumph in the desert, and then claimed the Miami Open title by beating Nadal 6-3, 6-3.
Djokovic would again beat the Swiss to win in Indian Wells in 2015, prevailing 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2, and proceeded to defeat Andy Murray 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-0 to also defend his Miami Open crown.
2016 saw the Serbian thrash Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-0 in the Indian Wells final, before a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori in Miami.
Djokovic holds a joint record of five Indian Wells titles and a joint record of six Miami Open titles.
