Novak Djokovic is one of just three players to win back-to-back titles at the ATP Finals this century.

Only three men have won three or more consecutive titles in the history of the year-end championships, which was first held in 1970.

Here are the eight players who have successfully defended the ATP Finals title.

Ilie Nastase: 1971-1973

Ilie Nastase won the second-ever edition of the ATP Finals in 1971, when the champion was determined by round robin standings. The Romanian won all five of his matches to triumph in Paris.

The former world No 1 went undefeated at the event again in 1972 as he overcame Stan Smith in the final to defend his crown in Barcelona.

In 1973, Nastase made it three successive year-end championship titles by defeating Tom Okker in the final in Boston. The two-time major winner added a fourth ATP Finals title in 1975.

Ivan Lendl: 1981-1982, 1985-1987

Ivan Lendl successfully defended the ATP Finals title on three occasions, while all five of his triumphs at the event came in New York.

The Czech-American great downed Gerulaitis in the 1981 final to win his maiden crown before he defeated John McEnroe in the 1982 championship match.

The eight-time Grand Slam winner collected three straight titles at the year-end championships in 1985, 1986 and 1987, defeating Boris Becker in the first two finals and Mats Wilander in the latter.

John McEnroe: 1983-1984

After winning the ATP Finals for the first time in 1978, John McEnroe added his second and third titles in back-to-back editions in 1983 and 1984.

The American icon beat Lendl in both the 1983 and 1984 finals, while all three of his triumphs at the event were in his home city of New York.

Pete Sampras: 1996-1997

Pete Sampras claimed his first and second ATP Finals crowns in Frankfurt in 1991 and 1994 before he took his tally to four with consecutive victories in 1996 and 1997.

The American legend overcame Becker in the 1996 final and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the 1997 title match, with both of these editions staged in Hanover. The 14-time major champion won his fifth and final title at the tournament in 1999.

The 20-time major winner then defeated Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 2010 and 2011 finals in London.

Novak Djokovic: 2012-2015, 2022-2023

Novak Djokovic, who has won a record seven ATP Finals crowns, stands alone for most successful title defences at the event with four.
