The 8 men with most ATP Finals appearances: Roger Federer with 17, Novak Djokovic No 2
Qualifying for the ATP Finals remains one of the greatest achievements in tennis, and is an art that a few have mastered across their careers.
Amid action in Turin this week, we look at the eight men who have appeared more than anyone else at the year-end championships.
=5) Rafael Nadal – 11 appearances
A true legend of tennis, Nadal appeared at the ATP Finals 11 times – and could have appeared more had he not withdrawn five times.
The Spaniard made his maiden appearance in 2005, reaching the last four, and then again reached the semi-finals in 2006.
Nadal was the runner-up in 2010 and 2013 and holds the unfortunate record for most ATP Finals appearances without winning the title.
His last appearance came in 2022 when he exited at the round-robin stage.
=5) Pete Sampras – 11 appearances
One of the most successful players in tournament history, Sampras also made 11 appearances at the ATP Finals – all of them coming consecutively.
The American made his event debut – the same year he won his maiden Slam title – and qualified every season over the 1990s, with his final showing coming in 2000.
Sampras won the title in 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, and 1999, and finished as the runner-up in 1993.
His maiden appearance in 1990 was the only year he failed to progress out of his group.
=5) Boris Becker – 11 appearances
Another player who produced some of his best tennis at the year-end championships, Becker is one of the four players on 11 ATP Finals appearances.
The German qualified for the first time in 1985 and made eight straight ATP Finals appearances, returning again from 1994-96 after failing to qualify in 1993.
Becker was a three-time champion at the tournament, winning his first title in 1988 before triumphs on home soil in Frankfurt in 1992 and 1995.
He was also a five-time runner-up, and only twice failed to make it out of his group.
=5) Jimmy Connors – 11 appearances
The final of four men on 11 showings, former world No 1 Connors sits equal fifth in the all-time appearance standings – and could have featured more had it not been for several withdrawals.
Connors made back-to-back semi-finals in his first two appearances in 1972 and 1973, though did not play the event for three straight seasons.
However, he returned to win his sole event title in 1977, and he would go on to reach a further five semi-finals at the year-end championships.
His final appearance came in 1987 when he fell in his group.

4) Ivan Lendl – 12 appearances
Only two men can better Lendl’s haul of five ATP Finals titles, and only three men are ahead of his 12 total appearances at the year-end championships.
Lendl qualified for the first time in 1980 and then qualified every season across the decade, with his final appearance coming in 1991.
The Czech won back-to-back titles in 1981 and 1982 and then won three straight titles from 1985-87, reaching a further four finals.
Lendl made nine straight finals at the championships from 1980-88 and never failed to make at least the semi-finals in his 12 events.
3) Andre Agassi – 13 appearances
Agassi’s 13 appearances at the ATP Finals came over 17 years, highlighting the tennis icon’s consistency towards the top of the game.
The American fell in the round-robin stage of his opening appearances in 1988 and 1989, before lifting his sole title at the tournament in 1990.
The eight-time Grand Slam winner reached further finals in 1999, 2000, and 2003, and was also a semi-finalist in 1991 and 1994.
Agassi made his final event appearance in 2005, retiring the following season.
2) Novak Djokovic – 16 appearances
No one has won more ATP Finals titles than Djokovic, with seven victories to his name – and only one man has appeared more at the event.
The Serbian qualified for the first time in 2007 and has only failed to qualify once since then, failing to make it 2017, and withdrawing from the championships this year.
Djokovic won his first title in 2008 and then triumphed for four consecutive years from 2012-2015, before sealing back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023.
He has also reached two further finals and three more semi-finals.
1) Roger Federer – 17 appearances
Just ahead in No 1 position is Federer, who made 17 appearances at the ATP Finals across his legendary career.
The Swiss qualified for 14 straight year-end championships from 2002-15, before appearing three more times across 2017-19 after failing to qualify in 2016.
Federer reached the last four on his debut in 2002, though he would then seal back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 as he began to dominate the tour.
He would again win consecutive titles in 2006-07 and 2010-11 and reached four further finals across his career.
Federer won 59 matches in total at the event, an all-time tournament record.
