Jannik Sinner’s triumph at the 2025 Australian Open saw him become the 11th player in the Open Era to defend the Australian Open men’s singles title.

Here, we look at the 11 men who have won consecutive Australian Open titles since the first Open edition was held in 1969.

Ken Rosewall – 1971-1972

Having won his home major twice in the Amateur Era, Ken Rosewall secured his third and fourth crowns Down Under at successive editions.

The Aussie defeated America’s Arthur Ashe in straight sets in the 1971 final before defending his crown with a straight-set win over compatriot Mal Anderson in the 1972 title match.

Guillermo Vilas – 1978-1979

Guillermo Vilas overcame Australian John Marks in four sets in the 1978 Australian Open championship match to win his third major.

In 1979, the Argentine downed American John Sadri in straight sets to defend his title and secure his fourth and final Grand Slam.

Johan Kriek – 1981-1982

Johan Kriek’s four-set triumph against America’s Steve Denton in the 1981 Australian Open final makes him the only South African to win a major title.

Kriek was representing the United States when he defended his crown with a straight-set win over the same opponent in the 1982 final in Melbourne.

Mats Wilander – 1983-1984

Mats Wilander won the first two of his three Australian Open titles — and the second and third of his seven majors — in successive years in Melbourne.

The Swede crushed Czech great Ivan Lendl in a straight-set 1983 final before beating South African Kevin Curren in a four-set 1984 championship match.

Stefan Edberg – 1985-1987 (no tournament was held in 1986 due to date change)

Stefan Edberg, Wilander’s fellow Swede, prevailed at the next two Australian Opens held — which were the last two editions played on the grass courts of the Kooyong Tennis Club.

Edberg denied Wilander a third consecutive title with a straight-set win over his compatriot in the 1985 final, while he saw off home favourite Pat Cash in five sets in the 1987 title match.

Ivan Lendl – 1989-1990

Ivan Lendl won the last two of his eight Grand Slam crowns at the Australian Open in 1989 and 1990.

The Czech cruised past countryman Miroslav Mecir in three sets in the 1989 championship match, while he was level at a set apiece and leading 5-2 in the third when Edberg was forced to retire in the 1990 final.

Jim Courier – 1992-1993

Jim Courier collected the second and last of his four majors on the hard courts of Melbourne Park in 1992 and 1993.

The American overcame Edberg in four sets in each of his triumphant Australian Open title matches.

Andre Agassi – 2000-2001

Having won his first Australian Open title in 1995, Andre Agassi secured the second and third of his four Melbourne crowns in 2000 and 2001.

The American defeated Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov in four sets in the 2000 final before seeing off Frenchman Arnaud Clement in straight sets to defend his title the following year.

Roger Federer – 2006-2007, 2017-2018

After his maiden Australian Open victory in 2004, Roger Federer downed Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis (four sets) and Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez (straight sets) in the 2006 and 2007 finals respectively.

Having added a fourth title at the hard-court major in 2010, the Swiss triumphed in consecutive years at Melbourne Park again between 2017 and 2018 to take his tally to six.

Federer beat Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic — both in five setters — in the respective championship matches.

Novak Djokovic – 2011-2013, 2015-2016, 2019-2021

Novak Djokovic is the only man in the Open Era to win the Australian Open in three consecutive editions and successfully defend the title on more than two occasions.

The Serbian claimed his second, third and fourth Melbourne crowns in successive years between 2011 and 2013, with his final victories coming against Andy Murray (straight sets in 2011 and four sets in 2013) and Nadal (five sets in 2012).

Djokovic achieved his second run of successive titles at the hard-court major in 2015 and 2016, beating Murray in both championship matches (four sets in 2015 and straight sets in 2016).

He then won the seventh, eighth and ninth of his 10 Australian Open titles to date from 2019 to 2021, when he overcame Nadal (straight sets), Dominic Thiem (five sets) and Daniil Medvedev (straight sets) in the respective finals.

Jannik Sinner – 2024-2025

Sinner won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open, where came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in a five-set final.

The Italian made it back-to-back triumphs at the Melbourne major in 2025 with a straight-set title match victory over Alexander Zverev.
