The 8 men to win first three Grand Slam finals: Jannik Sinner emulates Federer and Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner has become a three-time Grand Slam winner after successfully defending his Australian Open title by brushing aside Alexander Zverev in the 2025 final.
The Italian won last year’s trophy at Melbourne Park by coming from two sets to love down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.
His second final was a lot easier as he beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets at the US Open and now he again pulled off a three-set win at the Australian Open as he defeated Zverev in a dominant display.
Sinner is now 3-0 in his first three Grand Slam finals and joins some big names who have won their first three major finals.
1. Jimmy Connors
American legend Connors was the first to notch up the milestone and he did it in one year – 1974 – on grass.
In case you didn’t know, the Australian Open and US Open were also played on grass in the 70s and Connors won his maiden Grand Slam at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club when he beat Phil Dent 7–6 (9–7), 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 in the final.
A few months later he beat Ken Rosewall in straight sets at Wimbledon before completing the hat-trick with another three-set win over Rosewall on the grass at Forest Hills, Queens.
Interestingly, Connors then lost his next three Grand Slam finals as he lost in the showpiece match in the same three events.
2. Bjorn Borg
The great Bjorn Borg’s achievement was split across three years with his first title coming at Roland Garros in 1974 when he beat Manuel Orantes in five sets in the final.
He successfully defended his French Open crown the following year in his second major final – Guillermo Vilas in three – and then also claimed a straight-set win over Ilie Nastase in the Wimbledon final a few weeks later.
3. Stefan Edberg
From one Swede to another as Stefan Edberg emulated his compatriot in the 80s. Edberg beat another Swede in Mats Wilander in the 1985 Australian Open final as he won his maiden major.
His second Grand Slam came two years later at the same tournament as he got the better of Pat Cash in five sets before title No 3 came in final No 3 at Wimbledon in 1988 when he beat Boris Becker.
4. Gustavo Kuerten
Clay-court great Gustavo Kuerten is the only player to achieve the feat at the same event as it came at Roland Garros.
The Brazilian won his maiden Slam at the 1997 French Open, beating Sergi Bruguera in straight sets, then got the better of Magnus Norman in four in 2000 and Alex Corretja in four in 2001.
Those were also Kuerten’s only three Grand Slam finals.
5. Roger Federer
The first three of Roger Federer’s 20 Grand Slams came in his first three finals and you have to go back to Wimbledon 2003 for his maiden major trophy as he beat Mark Philippoussis in three sets at SW19.
Marat Safin was then beaten in straight sets at the 2004 Australian Open before he defeated Andy Roddick in four sets in the 2004 Wimbledon final.
Federer, of course, won his first seven Grand Slam finals.

6. Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka played in four Grand Slam finals and won three of those across three years.
The Swiss’ first title came at the 2014 Australian Open when he beat Rafael Nadal in straight sets and then he got the better of Novak Djokovic in both the 2015 French Open final and 2016 US Open title match.
He lost final No 4 against Nadal at Roland Garros in 2017.
7. Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz has won his first four Grand Slam finals with the first coming at the 2022 US Open when he beat Casper Ruud.
He then defeated defending champion and all-time great Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final before beating Alexander Zverev in the 2024 French Open.
The Spaniard made it four from four when he again beat Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in 2024.
8. Jannik Sinner
Sinner has not lost a match at a hard-court Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open.
The Italian produced an epic comeback last year at Melbourne Park when he beat Medvedev 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3 in the final and then defeated Fritz 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 at Flushing Meadows.
Alexander Zverev is his most recent victim as Sinner won 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 6–3 at the 2025 Australian Open.
