The 6 men to win the Shanghai Masters: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer with multiple titles
The Shanghai Masters has become one of the biggest and most prestigious titles in the men’s game, with this year marking 15 years since the tournament was first held.
The Masters 1000 event returned in 2023 after a three-year gap and some of the biggest names in the men’s game will again be battling it out for the title this coming week.
Ahead of action, we look at the only six men who have so far been able to lift the title.
Nikolay Davydenko – 2009
Davydenko became the first Shanghai Masters champion 15 years ago, with the former world No 3 lifting his third and final Masters 1o00 title at the tournament.
The sixth seed battled past Novak Djokovic in the semi-final – prevailing in a final-set tiebreak – before beating Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final.
Andy Murray – 2010-11, 2016
A three-time champion in Shanghai, only one man has lifted more titles in Shanghai than the recently retired Murray.
The former world No 1 thrashed Roger Federer to lift his first title in 2010, and successfully defended his title by beating Nadal in the 2011 final.
After a nailbiting loss in the 2012 final, Murray would eventually recapture the title in 2016, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic – 2012-13, 2015, 2018
A four-time Shanghai, no one has had more success at this event than Djokovic.
The Serbian saved five championship points to down Murray in the 2012 final, and then battled past Juan Martin del Potro in another epic clash to complete a successful title defence in 2013.
Djokovic sealed a third title in 2015 with victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, before defeating Borna Coric in the 2018 final.
He skipped the event in 2023, but is the fourth seed in 2024.

Roger Federer – 2014, 2017
Former world No 1 Federer joins Djokovic and Murray in being one of three men to lift the title on multiple occasions.
Following his final defeat to Murray in 2010, the Swiss finally got his hands on the title four years later, defeating surprise finalist Gilles Simon in straight sets.
Federer then added a second title to his collection in 2017, downing legendary rival Nadal to become a two-time champion.
Daniil Medvedev – 2019
Triumph in Shanghai capped off future world No 1 and Grand Slam champion Medvedev’s impressive rise in the second half of 2019.
Weeks after reaching his first major final at the US Open, the Russian eased past Alexander Zverev to capture the second Masters 1000 title of his career.
Hubert Hurkacz – 2023
Arguably the most surprising champion in Shanghai history is reigning champion Hurkacz, who took advantage of a wide-open draw 12 months ago.
The Pole was only the 16th seed heading in but ultimately saved a championship point on his way to beating Andrey Rublev in a final-set tiebreak, capturing a second Masters 1000 title.
Sadly for Hurkacz, he will not be able to defend his title this fortnight – with the world No 8 withdrawing to an ongoing knee injury.
