Indian Wells is one of the biggest titles any tennis player can win, and some of the ATP’s all-time greats have thrived at the tournament.

The seven men to record the most match wins at the tournament are all Grand Slam champions and former world No 1’s – here we take a look at the icons who have won more than most in the desert.

7) Lleyton Hewitt – 30

Hewitt remains the last Australian man to lift the Indian Wells title and is one of just a select few men to win back-to-back titles, triumphing in 2002 and 2003.

The former world No 1 was also a beaten finalist in 2005 and won a total of 30 matches in the desert across his career, the seventh-most of any man in the tournament’s 51-year history.

Narrowly ahead of Hewitt is American tennis icon Sampras, who won 31 matches in Indian Wells across his career.

Sampras’s greatest Indian Wells successes were his consecutive titles in 1994 and 1995, though he was also a beaten finalist in 2001.

=5) Andy Murray – 31

Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray matches Sampras with 31 wins at the tournament and holds the rather dubious record of the most match wins without ever lifting the title.

The closest Murray came to lifting the title was his runner-up finish in 2009, though he was also a semi-finalist in 2007 and 2015.

4) Andre Agassi – 37

After final defeats in 1990 and 1995, Agassi finally captured the Indian Wells title in 2001, thanks to a victory over long-time rival Sampras – the man who had beaten him six years earlier.

Agassi made his tournament debut in 1986 and made his 18th and final appearance in 2006, winning a total of 37 Indian Wells matches across his legendary career.

3) Novak Djokovic – 51

Djokovic is one of the most successful players in Indian Wells history, with a joint record of five titles to his name.

The Serbian triumphed in 2008 and 2011, before sealing three consecutive victories in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Having also reached the 2007 final and further semi-finals in 2012 and 2013, Djokovic has won 51 matches in the desert – one of just three men to make it above 50.

2) Rafael Nadal – 59

Indian Wells was one of Nadal’s most successful events outside of his beloved clay, with the Spaniard winning the event on three separate occasions.

Nadal lifted the title in 2007, 2009, and 2013 and was also the runner-up in 2011 and 2022, alongside progressing to a further six semi-finals.

The Spaniard won an impressive 59 matches in Tennis Paradise across his career, a tally that only one man can beat.

1) Roger Federer – 66

With a joint-record of five titles and a sole record of nine finals to his name, alongside the most tournament appearances, it comes as no surprise to see Federer at the very top of this countdown.

The Swiss initially won three straight titles from 2004-06 and then triumphed in 2012 and 2017, alongside further runner-up finishes in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019.

Federer won 66 matches in the desert, a record that looks like it will not be broken any time soon.
