Novak Djokovic equalled Roger Federer’s record for the most Grand Slam matches played by contesting his opening round match at the 2025 Australian Open.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion and 10-time Australian Open winner began his campaign at Melbourne Park with a four-set win over American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy.

Here, we look at the five players who have competed in the most singles matches at majors in the Open Era.

5. Venus Williams – 356

Venus Williams has played 356 Grand Slam singles matches across her 93 major campaigns, having made her debut at the 1997 French Open and played her most recent match at the 2023 US Open. This accounts for 32.5% of her 1,096 total career singles matches.

The American has played 109 matches at Wimbledon, 100 at the US Open, 75 at the Australian Open and 72 at the French Open.

4. Rafael Nadal – 358

Rafael Nadal contested 358 matches at major tournaments across 68 appearances, with his first coming at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships and his last at the 2024 French Open. This total makes up 27.4% of the 1,308 matches he played in his career.

The Spaniard played 116 matches at Roland Garros, 93 at the Australian Open, 89 at the US Open and 70 at Wimbledon.

3. Serena Williams – 423

Serena Williams competed in 423 singles matches in her 81 appearances at Grand Slam events, having made her debut at the 1998 Australian Open and played her final match at the 2022 US Open. This tally equates to 41.7% of her 1,014 career singles matches.

The American played 123 matches at the US Open, 112 at Wimbledon, 105 at the Australian Open and 83 at the French Open.

Novak Djokovic has played 429 matches across his 77 Grand Slam campaigns to date, with his first coming at the 2005 Australian Open and his most recent being played at the same event in 2025. This accounts for 31.8% of the 1,350 matches he has played in his career so far.

The Serbian has played 112 matches at the French Open, 109 at Wimbledon, and 104 at both the Australian Open and the US Open.

Roger Federer contested 429 major singles matches in his career across 81 appearances, having made his debut at the 1999 French Open and played his final match at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. This makes up 28.1% of his 1,526 total singles matches.

The Swiss played 119 matches at Wimbledon, 117 at the Australian Open, 103 at the US Open and 90 at Roland Garros.
