Roger Federer’s Cincinnati Open legacy: 6 stats highlighting incredible Midwest success
Few tennis players have ever been able to reach the heights that Roger Federer did during his legendary career.
The Swiss won 20 Grand Slam singles titles, spent 310 weeks as world No 1, and won an impressive 103 ATP titles across a career few will ever match.
There are countless events that Federer dominated across his career and one of them was the Cincinnati Open, which started on Monday.
With the tournament underway, we look back at some of the impressive records Federer set at the popular Masters 1000 tournament.
Most titles – 7
Federer’s record of seven titles is unlikely to be broken any time soon, with Mats Wilander’s total of four titles the closest any player has come to matching the Swiss Maestro in the Open Era.
He captured his first title back in 2005, beating home favourite Andy Roddick in the final, and regained his title in 2007.
The former world No 1 sealed back-to-back triumphs in 2009 and 2010, before further victories in 2012, 2014, and 2015.
It was the most successful Masters 1000 tournament of his career, and Wimbledon, Halle, Basel, and Dubai are the only tournaments he won more titles at.
Most finals – 8
Alongside winning the most titles in Cincinnati, Federer jointly holds the record for the most finals reached in the Midwest.
After his seven victories spanning from 2005 to 2015, he reached an eighth and last final at the tournament in 2018, losing to Novak Djokovic.
It is the Serbian that jointly holds this record alongside Federer, winning the title three times and losing the final a further five times – including losses to the Swiss in 2009, 2012, and 2015.
Most matches played – 57
This is another record that Federer jointly holds with fellow all-time great Djokovic.
The two have both played an impressive 57 times at the tournament, the ultimate indicator of the consistent success and longevity both had throughout their careers.
Djokovic may well break this record – and the most finals record – at some stage but will not do so this year, having withdrawn from the event.

Most matches won – 47
This is a record that Federer has outright, with no one able to match his record of match wins in Cincinnati.
He has a win-loss record of 47-10 at the tournament, a hugely impressive win rate of 82.5% across his time in the Midwest.
His runs to seven titles and one further final largely contribute to that record, though he also reached the quarter-final at the event in 2011 and 2013.
Most editions played – 17
No man can yet match Federer in terms of appearances in Cincinnati, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion playing the tournament 17 times across his epic career.
Federer made his Cincinnati debut in 200, coming through qualifying to reach the main draw, where he was beaten in straight sets by Francisco Clavet.
After skipping the event in 2001, he then played the tournament every year until 2016, when he withdrew due to injury.
Federer was also absent in 2017 but returned in 2018 when he reached the final and was back for the final time in 2019, losing to Andrey Rublev in round three.
Most times seeded No 1 – 7
The final Cincinnati record Federer holds is the most appearances as the No 1 seed, have been the top player in the draw seven times.
He was the top seed for the first time in 2004 though that was not his best campaign, beaten in round one by Dominik Hrbaty.
That was the first of six straight years where he was the No 1 seed, encompassing his first three title victories.
After being usurped as the top seed in 2010 and 2011 he was back as No 1 for the seventh and final time in 2012, capturing the title that year.
